Cornwall Park 100 Year Master Plan
As lead landscape architect on the Cornwall Park 100 Year Master Plan, for which Boffa Miskell are design partners, noted landscape architect Thomas Woltz was in Auckland last week; and on Wednesday night he presented a well-attended lecture at the Auckland Museum.
Thomas used three of the firm’s current projects to explain his design philosophy, and illustrate the role of private philanthropy in building public greenspace.
Faced with cuts to spending on local, regional and national levels, many large urban parks, which once were maintained out of public funds, need to find innovative ways to operate.
“Business as usual will not protect these places,” he said, noting that Cornwall Park was better positioned than many large city greenspaces, because funding comes from the working farm established within the park grounds.
Thomas returns to Auckland in April of next year, and he and Rachel de Lambert will present a keynote address around the theme of Water and Ecologies at the 2018 NZILA Firth Landscape Conference in Auckland.
