The shortlist for the 2026 Resene NZILA Awards has been announced, bringing together submissions from across the breadth of landscape architecture practice in Aotearoa.

This year’s Awards attracted a high number of entries, with the judging panel faced with an exceptionally strong field.

Shortlisting is the first stage of the wider Awards process. At this stage, entries were assessed against the award criteria based on the material provided in each submission, with the panel identifying those that demonstrated the strength, ambition and relevance to progress to more detailed consideration.

Reaching the shortlist required careful discussion and assessment. Many strong entries could not be carried through, reflecting the depth and quality of the submissions received this year.

The next stage allows the judging panel to look more deeply at the shortlisted work, including site visits for the design categories and final judging across the remaining categories. It is through this fuller assessment that the panel determines which projects go beyond established best practice and most clearly demonstrate the thinking, ambition, leadership and contribution recognised through the Awards.

The shortlist reflects the breadth of work being undertaken across the profession and the strength of the submissions put forward for consideration.

What happens next

Shortlisted entries in the design categories will now progress to site visits with the judging panel, while the remaining categories move into final judging.

This next stage allows the panel to consider the shortlisted work in greater depth before determining Awards of Excellence and category winners.

Awards of Excellence and category winners will be announced at the 2026 Resene NZILA Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday 5 November at One NZ Stadium in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
