Ake Ake Ake - A forever language
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of Aotearoa.
The theme for Te Wiki 2024 is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. It represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of the language. It also reflects the commitment New Zealanders have to embracing and learning te reo Māori long into the future.
Ake Ake Ake
In World War II, the 28th Māori Battalion marched into Europe singing “Ake! Ake! Kia Kaha e!”. Today the phrase ends karakia and speeches with unity and solidarity.
‘Ake ake ake’ symbolises hope and resilience.
The ake ake tree is also known for its resilience. It produces some of the strongest of all native woods and grows in some of the harshest climates. The name ake ake reminds us the tree is durable. Just like te reo Māori.
We can think of te reo Māori as a seedling with potential. Raised with others, given care and effort, it can grow and give shelter for future generations. Every action helps to make te reo Māori a living language across Aotearoa.
For those interested in learning more or participating in an event celebrating te reo Māori during Te Wiki 2024, the ReoMāori.co.nz website is an incredible resource. There are events, learning pathways, competitions, and news items available on the platform.
Interested in practicing some new words and phrases? Here's a clever bundle of resource cards to help you. Or check out a full range of resources, curated by Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, HERE (www.reomaori.co.nz/resources).
For those based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, a street parade on Monday September 16th (commencing at 10am), from TSB Arena to Waitangi Park, will take place.
Be sure to check your local council websites for a list of festivities.
