2021 Vectorworks Landmark Scholar Nearing PhD completion

Hanley Guanyu Chen, an enthusiastic landscape architecture researcher, is currently immersed in his doctoral journey at Lincoln University. Armed with bachelor's degrees in both Landscape Architecture and Horticulture, Hanley's academic foundation rests on a rich blend of creative vision and scientific acumen.

Hanley views designed landscapes as a potent catalyst for enhancing human well-being and fostering sustainability in our increasingly challenging contemporary world. This deep-rooted belief has been the North Star guiding him through his progression from undergraduate studies to his present pursuit of a PhD in landscape architecture at Lincoln University.

At the heart of Hanley's academic voyage lies his current research focus: Landscape Performance Evaluation, entailing an exploration of its relevant evaluation/valuation methods, strategies, frameworks, supporting mechanisms, and theories. Hanley hopes that his research can help landscape architects, their allied professionals, decision-makers, and the general public to better understand the cost of landscape developments and the values that designed landscapes can offer, and at the same time empower stakeholders with the knowledge needed to make well-informed design decisions.

Hanley's explorative enthusiasm is evident not only in his PhD research endeavours but also through his active involvement in various impactful initiatives. As a research assistant, he participated in the 2021 Case Study Investigation (CSI) programme funded by the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) and conducted New Zealand’s first CSI project together with Professor Jacky Bowring. His intellectual contributions extend further, encompassing diverse realms such as urban design and research projects. Among these is his engagement in an exploration of peri-urban land-use potential, a research undertaking led by Dr Shannon Davis, supported by the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge.

A list of Hanley's contributions is below:
