February 2022

Kia ora and welcome to my first update for the year. 2022 is already proving it is likely to be anything but plain sailing. In light of the expanding Omicron outbreak we have made the tough but necessary decision to move our key events to later in the year.

2022 NZILA Firth Conference
You’ll know by now this is a significant year for both the NZILA and the landscape architecture profession. The 2022 NZILA Firth Conference at the Cordis Hotel in Tāmaki Makaurau will now move from May to the new dates just being announced; 11-13 October.

This is an important event as we will of course be celebrating the 50th anniversary of NZILA. We have a great programme and line up of speakers confirmed and planning will now continue over coming months.

Resene New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architecture Awards 2022
Entries have now closed and the judges are currently reviewing all entries and will announce a shortlist soon. Winners will be announced at the gala dinner, which has also moved to October 13, still at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.

Webinars
In light of the current covid landscape we will bring you a series of webinars in the first half of the year. First up we will have BIG Landscape Partner, Giulia Frittoli for a webinar in early March, details will be released soon.

Celebration book
The book commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Institute is well underway and I’d like to thank the many people who have contributed in a wide variety of ways. We will keep you posted on its progress as it continues through the editing and publishing process.

Te Tangi a te Manu: Aotearoa New Zealand Landscape Assessment Guidelines
Speaking of books - Te Tangi a te Manu - Aotearoa New Zealand Landscape Assessment Guidelines will be published in a book in May.
You can pre-order here.

Climate Action Working Group
This year we will be developing publications that define the Institute’s position on and role in responding to climate change. If you would like to be part of our Climate Action Working Group which will assist us in the development and implementation of an actions policy then please drop me a line here.

Urban Design Working Group
We are also planning to establish an Urban Design Working Group to consider how the Institute can better promote and contribute to urban design matters across the country. If you are interested in the development and implementation of an actions policy then also please get in touch.

That’s it for now - you’ll be hearing much more from me this year.
