Reviewing the carbon foot of rain gardens
Reviewing the carbon foot of rain gardens
Presented by Craig Pocock

Craig Pocock is back in New Zealand for two months and going to be talking at a number of centres about his on-going and award winning research on the carbon landscape. His research covers issues such as the potential carbon cost of urban and landscape design, implementation, management and the disproportionately high carbon cost of urban renewal of public spaces.

Since 2004 when the concepts around the carbon landscape and the potential negative impact of design and management was a significantly less popular idea, Craig has been developing and presenting the idea in Kuala Lumpur, Rio, Montreal, Melbourne, Austin and Wellington to the design industry, material industry and government organisations. The carbon landscape had significant international uptake and has since been published internationally in multiple languages and is required reading and course work in Universities in both the United States and New Zealand.

The research has won a range of awards including the NZILA Sustainability Award of Excellence in 2013. In 2015, Craig was awarded the honour of NZILA fellow for his work on the carbon landscape and for its contribution to the industry. In 2016 he was placed on the IFLA advisory panel to advise on the impact of landscape architecture on climate change.

The timing of this roadshow is particularly relevant at this moment, considering New Zealand’s renewed focus on Climate Change and the recent Carbon Zero Act. Craig will cover subjects such as:

  • The carbon impact of landscape and urban design and whether it is possible offset with the carbon costs with the natural environment.
  • The carbon footprint of urban design, where the highest values sit within the design, implementation and management stages.
  • The role the material industry plays within the carbon landscape.
  • How economic tools can be used to reduce the carbon footprint of open space development.
  • Carbon mitigation options for public open space management.
  • The additional and significant carbon impact of urban renewal and how to avoid this environmental and financial impact.
