Joan Raun Nielsen and Sofie Willems - Spektrum Architects

Spektrum Architects work integrated with building architecture, landscape, urban planning and public participation and with the pursuit of working towards design that takes into consideration the specific site qualities and social dynamics. Working within the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning, the office insists on an architectural approach where inside and outside are inextricably linked. The office has a visionary architectural approach to architecture and landscape, generally working towards interactive and exciting architecture that appeals to the senses and makes an impression both in small and large-scale projects.

Spektrum Architects pursues a design based on site specific qualities and social understanding. Spektrum Architects has a visionary approach to architecture and landscape and pursues an interacting and enriching architecture that puts the senses into play and leaves an impression, both in the small and in large scale. Spektrum Architects creates spaces that are enriched by interaction with weather, landscape and people. Spaces that can engage the user and their feelings without losing functionality. Our desire for creating living buildings, cities or landscapes that surprise, inspire and appeal to our senses, makes us continuously ask questions and question solutions.

We work with space that should be discovered and experienced, space that interact with the user and inspires towards play, discovery and movement. Space must challenge the body to be used actively, to discover and learn. Through surprising staging and settings space must in every way awaken the fantasy of children and adults and contribute towards changing routines and expectations and motivate towards breaking with common notions and rules.

Spektrum Architects work towards creating space that is given meaning through interaction with weather, landscape and people. Places that engage the user and atmosphere without losing out on functionality. We question and focus on current challenges and attempt through immersion, play and experiments, to design buildings, cities and landscapes that are lively, surprising, inspiring and appeal to the senses.

Spektrum Architects has a number of winning competitions and completed prizewinning projects behind us. Among them can be mentioned Esbjerg Beach promenade, social housing in Madrid, the Danish Pavilion at Expo 08, Zaragoza, Spain and a park for rehabilitation and recreation in Århus, Denmark. Spektrum Architects was nominated by the Danish Architectural Association as the young Danish architecture office of the year in 2006 and 2007. In 2009 Joan Raun and Sofie Willems won a 3 year work scholarship from The Danish Arts Foundation.

Joan Raun Nielsen and Sofie Willems were awarded with the prestigious Nykredit Sustainability Prize 2016 for 'placing sustainability centrally in their architecture through inclusion, social awareness and commitment'. The work of Spektrum Architects is a testament to how architects with few resources and dedication can create projects with deep roots. Their work stands out with processes of strong social anchoring, where climate, landscape and people are engaged in an active learning process for the whole community. Spektrum Architect’s site-specific work manages to combine resource-conscious and social responsibility with local responsibility, architectural poetry and sensibility.’
