Urbanism NZ 2023 Conference
27 Apr 2023, Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland
Urbanism Aotearoa is a conference about making connections to bring about change. Our conversation started in 2018 and with a pandemic enforced hiatus, we are very pleased to be able to continue this in 2023.
Our focus is on the complex systems with interconnected issues directed by different stakeholders but seeking the same outcome - good urban environments for all people. As such, this conference is put together by a collective of organisations and urban professionals to stimulate discussion.
Urbanism NZ provides a diversity of conversations on our urban environments and their delivery including the evolution of urban design in Aotearoa through mātauranga Māori; climate responsiveness; designing for a healthy urban environment; working better with communities; infrastructure requirements and connectivity; land use and transportation.
Urbanism NZ will provide conversation on:
- Designing and realising successful urban environments
- Living the values of kaitiakitanga of the natural world to shape our urban places
- Delivering built environments to enable thriving communities
- Co-delivery to enable change
- Commercial imperatives in our new urban spaces
In 2018 our discussions and conference key outcomes were brought together in a report to Government - presented to the then Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Urban Development, who asked for a proposal to ‘unleash the power of great design’. The report outlined what could be done to better promote quality built environment in the New Zealand context and through the better promotion of urban design. Followed by a series of workshops held at Parliament with key stakeholders.
As collective representatives of the sector, we recognise that a lot more needs to be done to bring about change, so this collaborative discussion is more important than ever to join the dots and deliver action. This conference provides the opportunity to fill the void of no single agency representing policy direction and urban planning together with the design and development of our cities and towns. Through the interaction of a wide range of different stakeholders, the aim of Urbanism NZ is to stimulate discussion and debate on how to make quality cities, towns and places in Aotearoa in the 21st century for all communities.
