The Great Debate 2025 | Would AI design Auckland better than us?

CPD points: 1.0

We invite you to attend The Great Debate hosted by the Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland Branch of the NZIA, then stay on for the Festival Party in Q Theatre’s Lounge.

Six speakers. One big question. Architects, engineers and social commentators face off in two teams to argue for and against the motion: AI would design Auckland better than us?

Expect a spirited, quick-fire exchange that asks:

  • Can AI unlock Auckland’s potential and spark ideas beyond human imagination?
  • Or is the city best shaped by those who live, love and design it?
  • What can we learn from AI to get exceptional outputs – and where are its limits?
  • Will AI become a valued collaborator, or make building professionals obsolete?

Speakers:

  • Gordon Harcourt—communications guy and former journalist
  • Nicole Stock—strategist; former publisher of Architecture NZ and Houses NZ, and former editor of Urbis
  • Jon Rennie—architect and Principal at Athfield Architects, focusing on urbanism and public architecture
  • Lindley Naismith—architect, co-founder of Scarlet Architects, and Fellow of the NZIA
  • Mike Quirk—engineer and chairman, Buildings Market leader and New Ventures Director at Beca
  • Stephanie Miller—engineer and Project Director at Holmes, with a passion for sustainability

  • Wallace Chapman: former Creative Director and reporter, Host of Radio New Zealand's 'The Panel'
