SOLA Seminar Series: “In the wake of HMS Endeavour: How three Gisborne landscapes reflect a moment in history”

25 Sep 2019, Ōtautahi | Christchurch

Presented by Dr. Jacky Bowring – Professor in Landscape Architecture.

“On 8th October 1769 HMS Endeavour made landfall in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa (Poverty Bay/Gisborne). As part of reflecting on the 250th anniversary of this key moment in history when Europeans first set foot on Aotearoa New Zealand, it is timely to reflect on the legacy in terms of landscape architecture.

Three Gisborne gardens are explicitly connected to the Endeavour’s visit, in particular the collection of plants by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander: the Banks Garden, Endeavour Garden and the 1769 Garden. How do they navigate the questions raised about the arrival of science, of Linnaean taxonomy, and of the narratives of native and exotic?”
