Humanising the Prison Landscape
17 Aug 2022, Online & Lincoln University

Abstract
'A society should be judged not by how it treats its outstanding citizens but by how it treats its criminals.' Fyodor Dostoyevsky
What is expected of a prison environment? Aotearoa has the highest incarceration rate of indigenous women, a title Ara Poutama | Department of Corrections is drastically attempting to pass on through their Te Mana Wāhine pathway, currently underway at Christchurch Women’s Prison. As Landscape Architect on the project, Hana will discuss how the landscape can assist in the healing and rehabilitation process, particularly for wāhine Māori. This seminar intends to plant the seed of rethinking the possibilities for prison landscapes, to consider alternative ways of shaping the environments that are temporary homes to our most vulnerable.
