Green Star and Landscape Architects
21 Apr, Online
CPD points: 1.0
For many years, Green Star rating tools were largely building‑centric, with limited recognition of the critical role landscape design plays in sustainability outcomes. That has changed.
With Green Star Communities and Green Star Buildings, landscape architects can assist Green Star projects in achieving high‑performing, future‑focused projects. These tools expand sustainability well beyond the building envelope — addressing water, urban heat, biodiversity, whenua engagement, public realm, resilience, and human wellbeing — areas where landscape architects bring deep expertise and leadership.
In this webinar, Brad Crowley (Industry Relationship Manager, New Zealand Green Building Council) will unpack how both rating tools actively reward good landscape thinking. He’ll walk through key credits where landscape strategy, design decisions, and on‑site outcomes can directly influence a project’s Green Star success, highlighting where landscape architects can add real value from early design through delivery.
Whether you’re working on precinct-scale developments, commercial buildings, civic projects, or mixed-use environments, this session will help you:
Understand where landscape architecture intersects with Green Star requirements
Identify opportunities to strengthen sustainability outcomes through landscape design
Position your expertise as essential, not optional, within Green Star projects
If you want to ensure your landscape work is recognised, rewarded, and strategically aligned with New Zealand’s leading sustainability framework, this webinar is for you.

Presenter: Brad Crowley

Brad is the Industry Relationship Manager at the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC), where he advocates for embedding sustainability into the built environment. He has overseen the transformation of the Green Star rating tools, driving greater industry participation and integrating best practices in carbon reduction, waste minimisation, and cultural engagement. Brad has led the development of embodied carbon and operational waste calculators, and worked closely with the Māori Technical Working Group to incorporate indigenous values into green building standards. With over 25 years of experience in environmental strategy, auditing, and advocacy, he brings a systems-level approach to climate resilience and regenerative design. Brad is passionate about creating buildings that not only minimise environmental impact but actively reconnect people with nature—fostering spaces that promote wellbeing, ecological awareness, and a deeper sense of place.
