SOLA Seminar Series: “A Gamified Approach to Urban Morphology: engaging students with technology in the study of urban form”

12 Aug 2020, Online

This week’s seminar is a special topic, presented by Dr. Mirko Guaralda – Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Queensland University of Technology.

“A Gamified Approach to Urban Morphology: engaging students with technology in the study of urban form”

“Queensland University of Technology architecture students are mainly exposed to the design and understanding of buildings, their structures and systems. In this syllabus ‘Architecture and the City’, a third year undergraduate unit, is quite a unique experience for students to engage with urban form and gather an understanding of urban studies. This subject used to be delivered mainly as an overview of theoretical positions; although students’ appreciation was average and the outcomes satisfactory, there was no direct link between the theories exposed and how an understanding of urban form could be applied in the design studios. After completing the unit students had no idea of what to do with the content acquired in this curriculum.

This paper illustrates a constructivist approach to the teaching of urban form stressing also the importance of the implementation of a teaching-research nexus. Architecture and the City is currently the only unit delivered fully online in QUT architecture program. Learning is organized using a variety of platforms and structured through a gamification approach. For the last six years, students have been engaged with a variety of technologies to enhance their experience, currently students can fully customize their learning relying on an asynchronous approach as well as on a gamified system that afford them total control and agency on their learning. Data collected support the idea students’ understanding of the topic and its relevance within the curriculum has increased, as well as their ability to transfer the skill acquired to other units and also in their future work environment.”

The presentation is taking place ONLINE and it will be a PUBLIC LIVE EVENT.

The event will be recorded and available for viewing on the SOLA YouTube page
