The Wellington Branch are bringing you NZILA  Landscape10 : The Power of Landscape Conference 15-17 April 2010, Wellington. Thanks to the Conference Committee who are working on a great programme and line up of speakers.

The Wellington Branch kicked off the year with our annual petanque event held on 18th March. We had a great Wellington evening for the event with around 20 members turning out to challenge last years winners.

The winning team of 2010 was Victoria University 2nd year students Mary Zhou and Jessica Scheurich. With this event now an annual fixture there is talk of a trophy in addition to bragging rights for next years winning team.

The 2010 conference was held at Te Papa in April, organised by branch members. The organising committee started work in August 2008 in a period of economic uncertainty, assisted by conference organiser Janet Simes of Absolutely Organised.

Effort was put into developing the conference theme, a process that included holding several meetings open to all branch members. The organising committee then developed briefs for each session and selected speakers and a conference 'listener', Chris Laidlaw, in consultation with a number of NZILA members. A feature of the conference was the range of speakers from outside landscape architecture, and - taking the cue from last year's conference - offering a stimulating public opening lecture, this year by film director Vincent Ward. The Wellington Branch thanks the organising committee for all the work they put into this highly successful conference - Boyden Evans, Bron Faulkner, Steve Dunn, Shona McCahon, Ross Jackson, Cheryl Robilliard, Alayna Renata, Clive Anstey, and Victoria University students James Pattullo and Phil Bonifacio.

Wellington Branch brought NZILA Landscape 10 -The Power of Landscape Conference

We held a registration workshop on 17th June aimed at graduate members who are planning on undertaking the process to gain registration in 2010 or 2011 and beyond.

Julia Williams and Linda Kirkmeester kindly donated their time and expertise to talk about the two current paths that can be taken towards registration. New registered members Katie Bailey, Angela McArthur and Emma Corbett bought along their portfolios for discussion.
The Wellington Branch would like to thank Alayna Renata and MWH for the use of their meeting room to host this event.

In early June the branch submitted on the possible purchase by Greater Wellington Regional Council of land at Baring Head. The branch wrote a letter supporting the acquisition of this land in public ownership, to ensure the protection and integrated management of its multiple landscape values. The letter was circulated throughout the branch and received positive feedback. Special thanks to Shona McCahon for drafting the letter at very short notice.

Our CPD events for the year kicked off with a confronting presentation from Anne Stevens on High Country Landscape Issues for the Canterbury Westland Branch, centring particularly around the Mackenzie Basin. This nationally recognised outstanding natural landscape is under serious threat due to a hugely inflated drive to develop for intensive artificially maintained pastoral and arable farming. In particular there is a Central Government push for bringing 1.9million ha of dry land into irrigated production.

Anne put forward a case based on the work she has been progressing for some time now.(http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/what-we-do/campaigns/save-the-mackenzie)

Pivot Irrigators - Mackenzie Country near Twizel

In March Martha Dravitski (CCC, Strategy and Planning) presented the CCC Action Plan in response to Jan Gehl's 2009 Public Space Public Life Study for Central Christchurch

In March Mike Barthlemeh presented the Draft Landscape Charter to interested members before it was ratified at the April NZILA AGM.

In June members were invited to a workshop at Lincoln University covering Vectorworks, Sketchup and Adobe CS4 and in the same month Jennifer Dray and Jenny Moore held the annual workshop for those members intending to apply for their Associateship and Registration.

Also in June the Branch in association with Mike Thomas (Jasmax) held a Celebration of Local Achievement, recognising those local members who have gained an award in the 2010 Resene Pride of Place Landscape Awards. This was a very successful 10x10x10 style of presentation mixed with great wine (thanks Jasmax) and nibbles. Members were given a tantalising taste of ten award winning projects and were left wanting more. Congratulations must go to all award winners for their great achievement.

The Branch continues to have close links with other allied professions particularly the local Planning Institute, taking advantage of their full annual CPD programmes. The latest workshops available to our members are an Urban Design Workshop to be held in Dunedin from the 21st to 22nd of July and an Expert Witness Workshop to be held in Christchurch on August 4th.
The Canterbury/ Westland Branch AGM was held on Tuesday 10 August. Our guest speaker was John Potter of Boffa Miskell's Auckland office and winner of the George Malcolm Supreme Landscape Award for St Patrick's Square. John presented on this project and also spoke on Shared Space Streets before hopping back on his plane to Auckland. As always, AGM attendees were rewarded for their efforts by ample supplies of wine and pizza. (http://www.nzila.co.nz/awards2010/NZILA%20George%20Malcolm%20Supreme%20Award%202010.pdf)
Emma Content (with the help of Emily Kelly and Jody Tuuta) continues to edit our monthly Branch Newsletter. visit our CanWest branch news page These newsletters are our opportunity to update members on issues which have arisen at our monthly committee meetings, and to give information about upcoming events. We also celebrate achievements of our members and at times showcase submitted photography.

Initial planning is underway for the NZILA Conference to be held in Christchurch in 2012. We are in the process of forming a small and enthusiastic core team and have already been considering a theme, possible based around Creativity, Landscape Infrastructure or Recreation and Activity in the Landscape.

This year I will stand down as Chair and also from the Branch Committee itself. Thanks to the team for being such an enthusiastic group, making my job a whole lot easier. I know you will all carry on doing great things for the Canterbury/ Westland Branch and for all our members.
